
I’m staring at an empty text box right now. Not because I don’t know what I want to say, but because I’m wrestling with what I need to tell you.
This blog post? Partly written by AI. The previous one? Same. Actually, everything you read here is a collaboration between my thoughts and Claude’s help articulating them.
And now the question that’s been haunting me for weeks: should I have told you that?
The honesty nobody’s asking for
Let’s be honest: you probably don’t care how these words came into existence. You care whether they’re useful. Whether they make you think. Whether they’re worth your time.
Nobody reads an article and thinks, “Wow, I wonder if the author wrote this with a pen, keyboard, or AI.”
Yet it feels relevant. Why?
Because somewhere deep down, we believe the method matters. That a hand-painted picture is more “valuable” than a print. That a homemade cake contains more “love” than a store-bought one. That words flowing directly from your brain are more “authentic” than words that passed through AI.
But is that actually true?
The transparency trap
There’s a movement of people shouting: “You MUST disclose if you used AI!” They call it transparency. Honesty. Respect for your audience.
I get it. I feel it, even. But there’s a problem with this reasoning.
Nobody demands transparency about other tools.
Do you disclose that you used spell-check? That your editor rewrote your first draft? That you borrowed the sentence structure from an article that inspired you? That you consulted three books but cite none of them?
Of course not. Because we accept that writing has always been a process of tools and influences.
So why does AI feel different?
What we’re actually afraid of
The real question behind “should I disclose AI use” isn’t about transparency. It’s about fear.
Fear of being a fraud. If people know AI helped, does my contribution still count? Am I still a “real” writer, thinker, creator?
Fear of devaluation. If anyone can use AI to make this, what makes my work special? Why would people read me instead of just asking ChatGPT themselves?
Fear of judgment. People will think I’m lazy. Or not smart enough to write it myself. Or that I’m trying to deceive them.
These are understandable fears. But they’re based on a misunderstanding of what AI actually does.
What AI is and isn’t
AI isn’t an author. It’s a tool.
When I use AI, this happens:
- I have an idea, a question, a perspective
- I struggle with how to articulate it
- I ask AI to help express what I mean
- I read it, reject parts, rewrite other parts
- I add what’s missing, deepen what’s superficial
- The result is something I mean, but could never have said this clearly alone
Is that different from working with an editor? Using a thesaurus? Processing feedback from a friend?
The difference is scale and speed, not principle.
A new framework: intention over method
I think we’re asking the wrong question. The question isn’t: “Did you use AI?”
The question is: “Does this say what you meant to say?”
If the answer is yes, the method doesn’t matter. If the answer is no, no disclaimer will save you.
Two scenarios:
Scenario A: You use AI to generate a generic article in seconds about a topic you don’t care about, publish it without modifications, and pretend it’s your unique insight.
This is problematic. Not because you used AI, but because your intention was absent.
Scenario B: You wrestle with an idea you care about deeply. You use AI to help articulate it, rewrite it until it says exactly what you mean, add your own examples, and publish something that authentically represents your perspective.
This is legitimate. You just used modern tools.
The difference? Your intention, involvement, and accountability.
When disclosure actually matters
There are situations where you should disclose AI involvement:
1. When the method IS the point If you’re writing about AI, experimenting with AI, or evaluating AI—then transparency is part of the story.
2. When authenticity is the product If you’re selling based on “my personal experience, in my own words”—then you must be honest if those words aren’t yours.
3. When legal or professional standards require it Academic work, legal documents, medical advice—different rules apply here.
4. When it misleads your audience If you’re pretending to be a human expert while passing along completely AI-generated answers without verification.
But for most creative, educational, or personal content? The method matters less than the result.
My personal rule
I’ve developed a simple test:
Could I defend this in a conversation?
If someone asks me about an idea in my blog post, can I explain it? Can I go deeper? Can I tell them why I think it matters? Can I respond to criticism?
If yes—then it doesn’t matter how the words got on the page. If no—then I used AI to pretend I had something to say.
It’s not about the tool. It’s about whether you stand behind the result.
The practical side
“Okay,” you might say, “but what do I actually do?”
My advice:
For blog posts and articles: Don’t disclose unless it’s relevant to the story. Focus on whether the content is valuable.
For social media: Experiment openly. People appreciate the process. “Exploring this idea with Claude today” can be more interesting than pretending you thought of everything yourself.
For commercial content: Be careful. If you’re promising authentic expertise, make sure it’s there.
For personal projects: Do what feels right. Your moral compass is more reliable than other people’s rules.
What I’m doing now
I told you at the beginning that this post is partly AI. Was that necessary? Probably not for you as a reader. But it was necessary for me.
Because I was wrestling with this question. Because this article is about transparency. Because I want to model what I preach.
But for my next post about, say, the meaning of creativity? Maybe I won’t mention it. Not because I want to hide it, but because it’s irrelevant to what I’m trying to say.
The real question isn’t: “Did you use AI?” The real question is: “Do you have something to say?”
If the answer is yes, use whatever tools help you say it. If the answer is no, no disclaimer will save you.
Your choice
Here’s what I believe: the fear of disclosing AI use often reveals a deeper problem. It suggests you’re not confident that what you’re making is valuable, independent of how it was made.
Fix that. Make things you can defend. Publish content you stand behind. Use AI when it helps. Be honest when it matters.
And stop worrying about what others think of your toolbox.
They’re judging the result anyway.
